WEBCASTING

When Rich Joy contemplates his passion for the art and craft of cinematography, he recalls a defining moment. “I watched as a village rescued two cattle from an overflowing river”, says Rich, who was filming in Nicaragua after Hurricane Mitch in 1999, “I was capturing the human spirit in action!” It is Rich’s pursuit of what defines the human spirit; connecting us and driving us toward what is possible, that has molded his career and life. Rich joined Ventana Productions as a Director of Photography in June, 1997. Three weeks later, he was on assignment 12 miles into

the Atlantic Ocean - filming a memorial ceremony for those who perished on TWA flight 800 - and he was hooked. At one point, his crew had to transfer gear from one bobbing ship to another in the middle of the ocean, and he felt like a miniature player in a giant Donkey Kong game. But it was the significance of the ceremony and the importance for the people involved that really struck him. "What we photograph can really make a difference – bringing viewers to a place they would otherwise never go." The journey has taken Rich around the world as a cinematographer– from Nicaragua to Haiti to Mexico and all over the U.S. Rich began his career in Columbus, GA in 1993 and he quickly found himself in Washington, DC learning the ropes of Capitol Hill. As a Cameraman for NET in Washington, Rich expanded his skills filming profiles and investigative pieces. In 1996 He traveled to the Republican and Democratic conventions in Chicago and San Diego and had a chance encounter with Tim Murray from Ventana Productions – a meeting that, later, brought him permanent employment as one of the longest standing members of the Ventana team. Rich also pursues his own quest for what is possible in the human spirit; he has run 16 marathons - and in 2014 successfully completed an Ironman competition in Lake Placid, NY. Rich has recently filmed projects for Discovery Canada, Blackboard, Harpo Productions and National Geographic. An expert in camerawork and lighting - and at relating to each producer on a personal level, Rich is a go-to man for field and studio work at Ventana Productions.
